Data-Based Mechanistic and Top-Down Modelling

چکیده

The paper discusses the problems associated with environmental modelling and the need to develop simple, ‘top-down’, stochastic models that match the information content of the data. It introduces the concept of Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and contrasts its inductive approach with the hypotheticodeductive approaches that dominate most environmental modelling research at the present time. The major methodological procedures utilized in DBM modelling are outlined and two practical examples illustrate how it has been applied in a hydrological and water quality context. The use of this same methodology as a basis for the evaluation and simplification of large deterministic simulation models is also discussed briefly.

PUB and Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling: the Importance of Parsimonious Continuous-Time Models

The problem of Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB) is intimately linked with the concept of regionalisation; namely the transfer of information from one catchment that is gauged to another that is not. But such regionalisation exercises can be dangerous and should be attempted only with great care. The present paper addresses what the authors believe to be one essential aspect of regionalisatio...

The data-based mechanistic approach to the modelling, forecasting and control of environmental systems

The paper presents a unified approach to the modelling, forecasting and control of natural and man-made environmental systems. The modelling approach exploits the author’s Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling philosophy, combined with powerful methods of recursive statistical estimation. These provide the basis for two major stages of model building: first, the critical evaluation of the over...

Mechanistic population Models in biology: Model derivation and application in evolutionary studies

In general, models of ecological systems can be broadly categorized as ’top-down’ or ’bottom-up’ models, based on the hierarchical level that the model processes are formulated on. The structure of a top-down, also known as phenomenological, population model can be interpreted in terms of population characteristics, but it typically lacks an interpretation on a more basic level. In contrast, bo...

Bayesian classification of catchments using spatial data: a first step to improved modelling of catchment effects on stream ecological condition

A major challenge facing freshwater ecologists and managers is the development of models that link stream ecological condition to catchmentscale effects, such as land use. Previous attempts to make such models have followed two general approaches. The bottom-up approach employs mechanistic models, which can quickly become too complex to be useful. The top-down approach employs empirical models ...

Uncertainty, sensitivity analysis and the role of data based mechanistic modeling in hydrology

In this paper, we discuss the problem of calibration and uncertainty estimation for hydrologic systems from two points of view: a bottom-up, reductionist approach; and a top-down, data-based mechanistic (DBM) approach. The two approaches are applied to the modelling of the River Hodder catchment in North-West England. The bottom-up 5 approach is developed using the TOPMODEL, whose structure is ...
